Building a Community of Hope Around Alzheimer's Patients

Building a Community of Hope Around Alzheimer's Patients

Latest surveys reveal that almost six million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease — the most common type of dementia. Additionally, 15 million friends, family members, and professionals act as caregivers for these individuals. Because of the frustrating and saddening circumstances revolving around the disease, patients and family members need support from Alzheimer’s Association.

If you or anyone you know suffer from this disease, please know that you are not alone. Life does not end after getting a positive diagnosis. Instead, it changes into a new life, where patients and family members need a community of hope to get through daily challenges.

Alzheimer’s Association Background

Incorporated in 1980, Alzheimer’s Association is a non-profit organization providing affected communities with care, support, and research. It supports almost six million American patients with Alzheimer’s disease and their 15 million caregivers.

In 2020, the organization generated over $400 million in revenue, which it spends on the following expenses:

  • Alzheimer’s disease care, research, and awareness (78%)

  • Fundraisers (18%)

  • Administrative costs (4%)

With most of its revenue going to the Alzheimer’s community, the organization offers several projects that create a community of hope around patients.

Ideal Programs for Newly-Diagnosed Patients and Their Families

As we discussed with our guests Carlos Olivas and Stephanie Cardenas, receiving a positive Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis is a frustrating experience. However, through a community of hope, patients and families can still live their best lives. Learn more about the different support programs from Alzheimer’s Association.

24/7 Helpline

The organization provides a free 24/7 helpline, available even on weekends and holidays. If you have any questions or concerns about Alzheimer’s disease, please call 1-800-272-3900. Some volunteers run the lines, but most of those who answer calls are trained social workers who know how to deal with challenging situations. Keep in mind that this number is open for patients and family members alike.

Free Workshops

As discussed in our podcast, Alzheimer’s Association’s free workshops are some of the most helpful coping tools for the community. Our guests discussed a diverse selection of workshops that help patients and family members deal with their struggles, from patient care to disease education and even poetry.

The Walk

The Alzheimer's Association operates many fundraising activities to help communities and families cope with the disease. The biggest annual event is The Walk, where patients and caregivers actively participate to feel a sense of pride. Happening at the Center Health Park on October 2nd, 2021, this activity is crucial in providing the Alzheimer’s community with free support systems.
